We (husband and I) have to go to Freeport every Sunday for a temporary job. The first time we went out, we went super early to give us time in case we got lost. We didn't. Wandering around looking to kill time before the job started, we came upon an orange building named Dona Tere. Nowadays, we arrive at restaurant around 8:15am with a small customer population already there.

The breakfast menu is one page on back, but worth trying out every item. The flour tortillas are so big, they have to be folded into fourths to fit in the generic tortilla container. They are the old fashioned homemade, thick, flour tortillas, too. We have not tried corn tortillas but they are wonderfully crisp squares in the migas plate, despite all it's yummy red salsa. Just don't let them sit there if you want them to stay crispy. :)

My favorite is the Huevos Divorciados which means one egg in red salsa and one egg in green salsa (we order our eggs over easy.) The plate includes beans, cubed fried potatoes and two slices of bacon. Coffee is abundant.

Drawbacks include salsa with a kick that may not be good for the sensitive stomach and it gets crowded. I have an ulcer, but make sure to mix food with the peppy green salsa. Salsa is readily used in all plates, so be ready for spicy flavoring, especially the migas. Oh, and the menudo could be warmer with a little more spices, but we just had it one time. I think the fact it gets crowded is a good thing. The locals greet each other upon arrival/departure by going to the table to pay their respects. As outsiders, we cannot enjoy this tradition, but it's great to watch. Every now and then, we see a group of workmen just coming off their shift at the plant. Their animated conversation spills over to other tables as they enjoy their menudo, tacos and coffee.

Staff is friendly; spanish is helpful, but they become bi-lingual once you start speaking english. The owner has daughters who work as part of the waitstaff, so it is a family place. The kitchen staff (when I take a peek back there) are pros at mixing, frying, and flipping tortillas.

One Sunday in September, we were handed DT pens and the staff were wearing custom polo shirts. The girl at the register said it was their one year anniversary. When we came back for tacos to go, there was a mariachi group singing away with Dona Tere herself singing alongside them. It was a sweet anniversary for a good restaurant. I dearly hope that this restaurant celebrates more anniversaries long after our job is over and we no longer visit Freeport. But for now, we are DT people, and hope we get a visit to the table someday. :)
